Vulnerability title: SetUID/SetGID Programs Allow Privilege Escalation Via Insecure RPATH In Multiple HP Products For Linux
|Product:||HP Array Configuration Utility
HP Array Diagnostics Utility
HP ProLiant Array Diagnostics
SmartSSD Wear Gauge Utility Running on Linux
|Reported by:||Tim Brown|
It has been identified that binaries that are executed with elevated privileges (SetGID and SetUID programs) have been compiled in manner that means they searched for libraries in insecure locations.
SUIDFILE='/opt/hp/hpadu/bld/hpipcclient' SUIDFILELS='-rwsr-sr-- 1 root hpsmh 32752 Dec 13 2012 /opt/hp/hpadu/bld/hpipcclient' RPATH='' RPATHRELATIVE=yes RPATHLS=N/A RAPTHEXISTS=N/A ISBAD=yes
SUIDFILE='/opt/compaq/cpqacuxe/bld/hpipcclient' SUIDFILELS='-rwsr-Sr-- 1 root root 32752 Dec 13 2012 /opt/compaq/cpqacuxe/bld/hpipcclient' RPATH='' RPATHRELATIVE=yes RPATHLS=N/A RAPTHEXISTS=N/A ISBAD=yes
An attacker could place a malicious library in one of the affected directories, which would then be loaded when the affected program is run, leading to privilege escalation in instances where the program runs with privileges that the attacker does not have. For example, if the program is SetUID root, the attacker would obtain root privileges upon exploiting this vulnerability.
The proof of concept exploit code is available.
